GBU Season 2, Episode 10: It: Chapter Two

This movie sucked. It’s a sequel to another bad movie we covered two years ago.

Jon, Mike and I saw It: Chapter 2 this weekend, and did some podcasting about it. I’m afraid something funny is going on between our headphones and the headphone amplifier I use. I don’t know if it’s the amp or the 3.5mm to 1/4″ adapters I’m using, but things are very finnicky.

I want to address something I said on the show and am still debating with myself about going back and removing if I can. I don’t feel good about the way I described the character Beverly’s abuse at the hand of her father. Content warning about that sort of thing before I continue.

It was a throwaway mistake I made. But on the topic of Beverly: it is heavily implied in the book and movies that she is raped by her father, or, that her father is some roiling ball of anger and lust because he wants to rape her. I am embarrassed at the cavalier way I tossed that out as “her father fucked her or wanted to fuck her.”

In the moment, my brain was thinking on its feet, constructing the sentence just a few words out ahead of my intention, and when crossed with the verbal fork in the road of saying “rape”, which was honest, or “fuck”, which was a less ugly word than “rape”, I went with “fuck”. But this is an honest show and we’re all adults here, and I should have chosen the word which was more sincere and honest: we weren’t discussing matters of fucking, we were discussing a character’s rape, and to use a word as casual as “fuck” was a poor choice on my part.

If I go back and think I can stitch the episode together again in a way that removes that blunder, I may do it. It won’t be a good show of artistic integrity, hiding something like that, but I’d prefer that to keeping the episode on the internet in its current form.

Couldn’t make the cut without damaging the flow of conversation too much so I’ve added an addendum to the beginning of the episode to direct listeners here for my explanation.

In happier news, although I’ve got a lot of work to do around the house right now, I am planning to go hard over the next several weeks recording about some spooky movies in the lead-up to Halloween. Autumn is my favorite time of year. I’ve put a flag out in front of my house, and I’ve got like 6 more ready to rotate in. I bought some fall-colored “Christmas” lights. Do you hear me? We’re going hard on Autumn. Stay tuned for the GBU Spooktacular Halloween Horror Fest!
