Well, it’s been a while since we’ve recorded a new episode! I wrongly said on the show that the most recent one had been with Sleepy Hollow with Cea, when in fact it had been The Rocketeer with Jon and Kayleigh. I think I just blocked that one from my memory because it was such a bad time. I mean really, you can hear it on the recording, it was just a bad time.
You know what else is a bad time? The first several days after you watch Gaspar Noé’s 2018 film Climax.
As I mentioned in the episode description for the file, I had been forewarned that this movie might put me in a bad headspace, and I didn’t think that it had, only that evening when I went to sleep, I had one of the worst dreams I’ve had in my entire life. I can still see the thing that upset me so much I was sobbing in the dream, and I’m afraid I’ll never forget it. Like, this movie took my subconscious to about the darkest place it could.
Which, if you’re into art being powerful, is quite the sales pitch, don’t you think?
This movie really is phenomenal, brilliantly-executed high art. But it’s not for everyone. And even if you’re the sort of person it is for, it may still get under your skin in ways you don’t see coming. So, be forewarned.
Just a production note: episode after episode I listen to myself talking over my co-hosts, and I know it’s something I need to work on. I think it’s because with the show’s original co-host, we had more of a debater’s dynamic. I really had to insist upon anything I wanted to say actually making it past my mouth, past what he was saying, and to the listener’s ears. But when you are that quick to jump all over people who aren’t themselves trying to talk over you, it makes you sound like a radio bully and it makes the show a lot less listenable because two points are so often being made at the exact same time. I know I do this in my personal life too. A friend of mine agreed that it’s an issue when I caught myself doing it a few months ago, and she smiled and said, “you just get excited.” And that was a sweet way of her to put it, but let’s be real, it’s an issue, and I need to be more conscious of it, and I’ll try to be in future recordings.
