Late Episode, Oscar Party

Yesterday was a real thrill ride.

Adam and I got together in the early afternoon to record the second half of episode 9 (or 10? I can’t even remember at this point); this was because it took me about a month to watch his pick for me, and we recorded the first segment when we could, and the second weeks later. This sort of calamity is still something we can get away with until the numerical episode releases catch us up. Still, I think it was a great segment (albeit perhaps impenetrable for anyone who hasn’t seen the movie in question).

After that was taken care of, we moved to the living room and put The Academy Awards on once it began, and goodness gracious, we watched the entire stupid thing. Four hours. Why, you could watch an obscure Japanese film about Christianity and upskirt photography in that amount of time! But Adam was glad to see Leo win; I wanted to believe they’d snub him again and let that joke keep playing itself out, but I didn’t realize who he was up against, and once I did I knew he was a shoe-in.

I for one (though I don’t think Adam really disagrees) was happy to see how many awards Mad Max: Fury Road racked up, and Adam who saw and enjoyed The Revenant was just as glad to see that movie earn its due accolades.

Not to get too hung up on it, but I thought half or more of Chris Rock‘s joking about the situation with the Oscars not nominating a single actor of color for the second year in a row were in very poor taste, and minimized the importance of the issue while poking fun at it in ways that didn’t always make the film industry the butt of the joke it so rightly deserved to be. But his material wasn’t terrible (again I can only speak for myself here) and if memory serves (it was very, very late) he did have some decent remarks to make about it toward the end as well as the president of the Academy who gave a nice speech at the conclusion.

All in all, it was a good night, but fuck them for dragging it out. Low-wage people like me had to be up for work early this morning; we don’t have mansions in which to sleep in until 9.

Now, about the episode release we missed. I don’t know if this will truly wind up being a weekly show or not. I think the stability of a recurring day of the week for a show to air is very appealing from an audience perspective; it gives something for one to look forward to and have confidence in. But on the other hand, I don’t know if, when we get these old recordings out in the world, we’ll be able to keep up with that kind of output. We just don’t have this information yet because we haven’t lived through it yet. I also find a little romance in the idea of releasing a product of quality when it’s done rather than trying to adhere strictly to a structured schedule. But that also runs the risk of getting very undisciplined and eventually wearing away at our work ethic. I just don’t know how it’s all going to turn out.

But I did have every intention of releasing an episode yesterday. Between recording and watching the Oscars, Adam was visiting for nearly 9 hours and nowhere within would I have had time to edit an episode completely; could’ve, should’ve done it over the weekend, but que sera, sera it did not happen. I was busy with other things, of which one was seeing Deadpool a second time, this time with my room mate, a fan of the character since we were in high school. And now that I’ve seen it once loaded with hype, had time to sit on it, and gone back to see it a second time I think I’m ready to re-write the review I was working on for the blog, and I’ll try to get that out soon as well. I’ve got some time-draining work I need to bring home and do for my job, so this is all up in the air but I’d like to try and get that missed Sunday episode out no later than Tuesday if I can, and the Deadpool review probably somewhere in a similar time frame.

I love doing this show, and I’m sorry that I’m not an especially disciplined person. Hopefully the show will shape me back into one, eh? Stick around and we’ll thank you heartily for your patronage.

Damn it.

Sometimes you upload the wrong file. For fuckssake.

[Edit: Fixed]

[Edit: Not actually fixed all the way, since the original VO is all plopped together at the end of the show. I’ll replace the file later today when I get the opportunity, but the damage has largely been done. It’s good to make these sorts of mistakes, though, and to get them out of the way early, when we have a small and forgiving base of listeners. Hopefully these two technical flops (the completely wrong file, and one sloppily cut) won’t come up again.]

Apologies For The Delay

I had every intention of getting Episode 5 online this past Monday morning; I wanted to establish a structure of trying to get these out on Monday mornings, just to see if I could keep to a schedule. Apparently I couldn’t. I’ll try to correct that by having another episode ready to go next week.

This is a growing experience for me. This podcast is like the egg that you name and house for a week with your teacher’s initials penciled onto the bottom of it so s/he knows if you break it. Except I don’t get to turn it in. I have to check it in often and never break it if I can avoid it. And this metaphor only gets more complicated as I try to find a way to shoehorn in the monthly storage allotment I pay for.

Dropping the metaphor completely, I’ll put it this way: we’ve got precisely 2 weeks from this day (thank goodness for leap years, eh?) to fill approximately 3 episodes’ worth of space. So if I can get Episode 5 online today or tomorrow, and get Episode 6 (or some sort of bonus mystery content perhaps?) ready before next Monday, then we’ll actually be all back on track for the month.

Jesus, this is hard. It’ll be even harder once we have to buckle down and really decide upon, then lock into a consistent release schedule.

It’s also hard to believe how uncomfortable I’ve become with some of the show’s content since it was first recorded. I can’t tell you how many things were cut before the final episodes published. Episode 5 includes a minute or so of content that I was fine with the dozen times I previewed it last year, but which plays some part in why the episode is not out yet…because I had a lapse of confidence as to whether or not this is really something that belongs in an entertainment product, or if it just brings everything down too far. I’m just too close to it, I suppose. I can’t tell the good from the bad (or the unwatchable, HAH) or the entertaining from the disturbing anymore. I’m losing my mind.

At any rate, sorry again for the delay, and as a way of making amends, I’ll be penning you a freshly crafted Deadpool review.

GBU 1 – Avengers: Age of Ultron & 8 ½

Wow. Lots of big stuff going on. The true first episode of the podcast has gone up, and soon you’ll find it on iTunes, where we have just been listed. I’ve also applied to get the show listed on the upcoming Google Play Music podcast section. Between these two, both iOS and Android users should have easy access to the show. The fastest way to find it will be by searching “GBU” in the appropriate podcast app.

Here’s the episode, with some behind-the-scenes notes to follow the links to stream and download.

Show Notes:

This was the first episode we recorded. I had wanted to podcast for years, and after I finally had all the hardware, I was having trouble thinking of a show to proceed with. Adam and I happened to be getting into it about our different tastes in film last summer, and he began pushing to just do a show where we argue about films. He then pushed me further, and after we’d exchanged a few quid pro quo agreements to watch different films, he said “let’s just do it, let’s just go upstairs and record right now.” And so without any confidence, but a fair amount of beer, we sat down and dove in for a four-movie recording that almost lasted for four hours.

We were initially passionate about doing all four movies at once but in the weeks that followed, we agreed that no one, anywhere, would want to listen to a 3 and a half hour podcast. So, the painful decision was made to split it in two. I didn’t really know what I was doing with the mixer, editing was long and grueling, and the show was failing to take much shape as I tried to cut it together. But that didn’t stop us from recording more. We learned by doing.

You’ll find that this episode doesn’t have the same sound quality as the Christmas special which we released first. There’s a long and boring, very technical story about how that happened, but I don’t want anyone to get the wrong idea, that all the shows will sound that way. The quality of each episode gets better and better as we learn and refine.

We’re also very grateful to Ghost Diamond for letting us use their music. That helped immensely in setting the structure and pace of the show. Do yourself a favor and check out their music.

The First-Ever GBU Christmas Blowout Extravaganza

I should have posted this sooner, but my only concern at the time was getting the podcast online and to notify all of my friends, family and confidants of that fact. The blog was secondary. Hopefully by the end of the day, our domain will officially be CandidPodcast.com. For now, here’s the very first episode of the show, which is in fact, the…9th?…in production order.

And a quick note: I forgot to mention in the opening that we talk in this episode about A Charlie Brown Christmas.

Brian’s GBU Christmas Round-Up: The Christmas Tree

The Christmas Tree

The Christmas Tree was brought to my attention, as it was I’m sure to many others’, by Doug Walker in his film reviewer role as The Nostalgia Critic. This was, he said, becoming fast known as the worst Christmas special ever made. His review of the picture is about a half-hour long, nearly as long as the short film itself, and seems to cover all the important bases, so I didn’t seek the title out last year after his video went up. This year, however, seemed like the perfect excuse, and of course this 1991, low-budget, straight-to-VHS (or was it made-for-TV?) production is now easily found in its entirety on YouTube. It was actually the first Christmas special I watched this year.

The 1st Annual Exploratory Christmas Film Endeavor

This year in Ohio (or at least, my part of Ohio) the weather has been warm. I’m sure it’s got nothing to do with climate change. I’m just sure of it. And because I’m so sure, I can observe without worry, that we’ve experienced more Spring-like days in November and December than we did in all of Spring during this past year. There’s no goddamn snow, is what I’m trying to say.
