Pacific Rim: Uprising Is Not Very Good

When I saw the first Pacific Rim, only a few months ago, I had heard that it was just a “live action anime”, and took that to mean “stupid and full of robots.” And while that turned out to be the case, what I hadn’t appreciated until around halfway through was that it really was aspiring to be everything that anime is: melodramatic, taking itself too seriously, full of insane characters and silly expositional dialog…

Once I realized all that, I was able to enjoy it more. It was stupid, and its characters didn’t know it, and its writer, director, and actors all seemed to. What fun!

Uprising, based on the trailer, looked like more of that.

Nah, Fuck It, I’m Not Done Yet

I thought I was going to end this podcast and start a new one. But why do that when I can just start this one over fresh?

At some point I’ll have to explain myself. For now, I just want it on the record that I’m bringing the show back. Until such time as there are new episodes, I’ll be using this site to blog about some films I’ve been watching.

And when I’ve got some time, I’ll go back through the old content and restore most or all of it.

I missed you, imaginary audience. Did you miss me?

Closure.

GBU is over. For financial and logistical reasons I can’t guarantee the episodes will stay online much longer. To be on the safe side, download and back them up for posterity. If they disappear, it will be on or near 1 February 2018.

I am terribly proud of the good work we did on GBU. It was the first creative endeavor I’ve had in as long as I can remember that I committed to, and worked hard on, released despite my worries, and was genuinely proud to have made. I can say, honestly, that I love all the content we produced–even the rougher ones.

This isn’t the end of podcasting from me. I won’t let that setup rust. But it’ll be a minute before I’m re-organized and ready to start fresh. Once I do, I’ll look into a more permanent home for the old GBU content. But at least for now, it may become unavailable for an amount of time I can’t really predict.

37+ hours of released content spanning 32 unique episodes, covering dozens of movies. Nearly 2,000 unique downloads in over a dozen countries (for some reason). A 4.5 star average rating on iTunes (across 6 reviews!)

What a long, strange trip it’s been.

Much love.

Brian’s Exploratory Christmas Endeavor ’17: King of the Hill: Pretty, Pretty Dresses; Hillennium & ‘Twas the Nut Before Christmas

Mike Judge and Greg Daniels’ King of the Hill is one of the greatest shows that ever aired on television, animated or otherwise. If you need me to explain why, you really need to go back and watch the show. Start at the beginning. Then do your best to sort of grin and bear everything after Season 6. It’s not bad. It’s just not the same.

Anyway, there have been a few Christmas episodes and I recently re-watched the first three of them: Pretty, Pretty Dresses; Hillennium and ‘Twas the Nut Before Christmas.

Brian’s Exploratory Christmas Endeavor ’17: Bad Santa 2

badsanta2

Adam and I got sloshed last night and watched Bad Santa 2. It was horrible.

After looking back through the archives, it seems I have not written a blog post about Bad Santa. This is probably because we covered it on one of our Christmas episodes. To varying degrees, Adam and I were on the same page about that one. It had some charm. It was overall an enjoyable film that deserved to exist.

Brian’s Exploratory Christmas Endeavor ’17: Ranma ½: Tendo Family Christmas Scramble

Full disclosure: this review is nostalgia-informed. Perhaps nostalgia-captive.

I love Ranma 1/2‘s Christmas OVA, Tendo Family Christmas Scramble. I even love the title, because it includes the word “scramble”, which is an A+ comedy word.

Brian’s Exploratory Christmas Endeavor ’17: A Christmas Prince

A Christmas Prince

Netflix is finally going after the sweet, sweet schmaltzy cinematic trash money that ABC Family has been hogging to themselves for years. To wit, I provide you the trailer, which essentially plays the entire movie out in 2 minutes:

GBU 23 – IT

IT.jpg

Here’s another belated post for an episode we did some time ago, but now we’re all caught up! We discuss part one of the remake of Stephen King’s IT, directed by Andy Muschietti and starring a bunch of kids alongside Bill Skarsgård. We have a special guest, and it’s all-in-all one of our best shows.

I’ll just spoil for you all that we didn’t make the cut-off for our Spooktacular Halloween episode this year. Sorry! But we’re still planning to get our Christmas episode out, and our next catch-up episode, recording soon, will include some of the horror stuff we were watching in anticipation of that Spooktacular.
